Most years, when autumn rolls around, Halloween quite literally creeps upon us and there tends to be little time to prepare your home for family, party guests or trick-or-treaters.

Getting into the spirit does not have to take tonnes of effort and can be just as delightful as the festivities themselves, whether you are watching a horror movie marathon with friends, hosting a fancy dress party, or just binging on your favourite chocolate.

However you decide to celebrate, you will need some scarily good soft furnishings and decorations to help set the scene. To spark some ideas, we have listed 5 of our top tips below to help get your home Halloween ready. GO GO GO!

Make your sheets seasonal
Tip 1: Make your sheets seasonal

Halloween is undoubtedly the next big social event on your little one’s calendar so why not make their room the star of the show at upcoming sleepovers by picking up our NEW Dreamscene monster print duvet cover set. It is a fab way to get them into the spirit and add colour to their room with its vibrant monster print design.

This cover is also suitable for use all year round as it is reversible, having a classic checked grey and white pattern on the other side. Simply flip the duvet round to ditch the monsters and reveal a more versatile everyday print! The set is available up to double size so you can even match the younger members of your family if that tickles your fancy.

Should you want a more mature bed setup for yourself, that will see you through the whole of autumn, have a look at our autumn edit which is currently live on the website. Light up your lair
Tip 2: Light up your lair

Lighting is a great way to create the desired mood at this time of year whilst being an absolute necessity since the evenings are generally a lot colder and darker. With just a few decorations dotted near the lit-up areas of your spaces, you can make rooms look a lot spookier with minimal effort.

An eerie flicker works particularly well at a Halloween gathering so the next time you light tapered or dinner candles, let them drip and work their magic then arrange around the house in preparation for the big night. Bonus points if you have got some wine bottles to spray paint and stick them in so you can make the most of the drippage...the messier the better!

For the bedroom, we have styled a string of pre-made wicked lantern lights but you could always upgrade some plain paper ones you have to hand by painting them, adding studs or sticking on paper cutouts of creepy character’s features.

Add crafted pumpkins
Tip 3: Add crafted pumpkins

Pumpkins are absolutely essential when it comes to decorating for Halloween and although it is fun to carve real ones with your family, they don’t last very long and are usually left to disintegrate on the side. Mouldy pumpkins anyone?!

To save yourself the cleanup, create some DIY pumpkins which will last you for a few Halloweens to come and be just as enjoyable to make for everyone involved!

Home influencer Anne-Marie aka @thislittle_houseofmine recently shared how to make a mop pumpkin, a unique crafty decoration, from just a few super inexpensive items that you may already have lying around your home/garden. You can find out how here by watching her Instagram reel…

There is no need to start from scratch either, transform and refresh any existing faux pumpkins you have stored away as well so as to not be wasteful.

Scatter fake spiders
Tip 4: Scatter fake spiders

As far as we are concerned, this is the only occasion when spiders are welcome in our houses and even then they MUST be fake. Fake spiders and their webs, like pumpkins, are another classic choice of decoration for Halloween, perhaps because they add a spine-tingling layer to any space.

Getting hold of plastic creepy crawlies and web material will not set you back hardly at all and can be used in a whole host of ways around your home, either as part of other decor or on their own. Add a handful to your liquid hand soap, create a trail across your door, pop them into your ice trays with water...let your imagination run wild!

If you are in the mood to craft your own eight-legged friends, have a look at this easy pipe cleaner spider garland tutorial...only three supplies are required to make one! Throw black balloons into the mix to give them bigger bodies, the pipe cleaners can then be used for their hairy limbs alone.

Gather spooky snacks
Tip 5: Gather spooky snacks

Drinks, desserts and various other delicious delights are of course going to be needed when hosting a Halloween event so why not make them double up as decor? Two (black) birds one stone we say! As with most of the other tips on our list, you can either buy pre-made delicacies, chilling containers and sinister serveware or make your own…

For the studio, we picked up some skeleton hand glasses, foamy eyeballs and a classic pack of Swizzels sweets, as pictured above. Cute, right?!

Similar to faux plastic spiders, a trusty pack of stick-on googly eyes has so many possibilities and can easily transform any of your inanimate objects into monster creations. Black plastic cups? Add googly eyes. Wrapped chocolates? Add googly eyes. The produce in your fruit bowl? ADD GOOGLY EYES! A black sharpie can work too if you are looking to bring larger dull objects to life.
