Fitted sheets with a thread count of between 200 and 500 will provide the best results, as well as the best value for money, as when you get much higher than this you won’t notice much of a difference in the quality or softness. So, you can find cheap fitted sheets that will provide the quality you’re looking for, as long as the thread count is around 200 or above. It is important to remember that the material of the fitted sheets will also change the quality, for example, a cheap fitted sheet made of cotton will feel better quality than one made of pure polyester. To give you an idea, most luxury hotels will choose fitted bed sheets with a thread count of between 200 and 300!
Deep fitted sheets usually have a depth of around 12 inches, or 30 cm, which tends to be ideal for deeper mattresses. Deep fitted bed sheets are also well suited if you have a standard mattress with a mattress topper, to make sure that the sheets stay in place all night. The elasticated edges also make these fitted bed sheets really easy to put onto your bed. If your mattress is much deeper than 30cm, then you may need special deep fitted sheets made to measure.
The most popular bed sheets tend to be those with a thread count between 200 and 600, as these provide the best value for money in terms of quality.
Looking at popularity in terms of the material, firstly there is cotton, which is the most common type of flat or fitted bed sheet you will come across. You can get both luxury or cheap fitted bed sheets in cotton, whilst still maintaining quality, which is what helps to make them so popular. Cotton sheets are also easy to care for, wash well and are breathable, making them good for all year round. Egyptian cotton tends to be a very popular choice of sheets for beds, as it is the highest quality and has incredible durability. Pima is another very popular form of cotton for fitted sheets, as it is also very durable and high quality, but can be less expensive than Egyptian cotton.
Linen is another very popular material for bed sheets, as they are very airy and breathable, whilst also being hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for warmer sleepers with allergies. This material can be slightly more stiff than other materials, yet if you are a fan of super soft bedding, you’d be better choosing cotton.
Polyester can be used to create cheap fitted sheets, and although pure polyester can be quite rough, you can get fantastic polyester sheets blended with cotton (known as polycotton) which are really comfortable, easy to care for and affordable. You won’t need to iron polyester, which is a benefit over cotton.
Overall, cotton or polycotton sheets tend to be the most popular choices!
In terms of the style of sheet, there are two main options; fitted or flat sheets. Fitted bed sheets tend to be the most popular choice as a bottom sheet, as they stay in place really well and don’t move around as you move when you sleep.
Flat sheets are then more popular to have between your duvet and the bottom sheet, which can be used to help make your bed feel more cosy, providing an extra layer of warmth or softness when you sleep. Not everyone opts for a flat sheet, however it can also be beneficial to quickly swap your flat sheet to help your bedding feel refreshed between washes. This really comes down to preference, however a flat sheet isn’t essential.
